The 110 direct-drives are the machines that built Sears' reputation, and they fail in endearingly cheap ways. Fills and drains but won't agitate: sheared motor coupling — the part costs less than lunch. Upper agitator spins uselessly: worn agitator dogs. Washes but won't spin: lid switch (listen for the click) on older machines, lid lock on newer ones. Leaves clothes soaked: drain path first, then the clutch. The 796 Elite Playbook (LG Inside)
Kenmore Elite front-loaders with the 796 prefix are LG Direct Drive machines in Sears clothing, error codes included. UE flashing every load means the shock absorbers or suspension have tired, not that your laundry is unlucky. OE means the drain path — start at the coin-trap filter behind the little door at the bottom front. A door that won't open wants the drum stopped and the water drained; LE is the motor position sensor crying wolf. Checks That Apply to Both
Whoever built it, physics is shared. One sixty-second unplug is legitimate first aid after a power blip. Hoses kink behind machines that get shoved to the wall; taps close themselves during renovations; a floor drain standpipe swallowing the hose too deep will siphon a washer mid-cycle and masquerade as a fill fault. And any washer that walks, bangs, or aborts spins on every load has a suspension complaint whatever its parentage. How do I reset a Kenmore washing machine?
Unplug it (or flip the breaker) for sixty seconds and restart the cycle — that’s the only reset any Kenmore washer honestly has, whichever manufacturer built it. Electronic models reboot their control board; mechanical-timer machines have nothing to reset at all, so a “reset” that seems to work on one was coincidence. If the problem returns within a load or two, a component is failing and resetting is just postponing the phone call.
Why does my Kenmore washer make a grinding noise but not agitate?
On the 110-series direct-drive machines — the most common Kenmore washer in Alberta — grinding without agitation is worn agitator dogs or a dying motor coupling, both inexpensive Whirlpool-design parts. The distinction takes a technician minutes: dogs make the upper agitator ratchet freely; a sheared coupling leaves the motor humming while the basket ignores it.
